Holy Trinity Sunday
Trinity Sunday is an opportunity for us to think deeply on how God is in relationship to us.Let me start with no one really fully grasps the awesomeness of God.It is impossible for us to give definition to who God is and HOW God works amongst us.
That being said, we have many who are witness to God’s work among us through study of God’s Holy Word in the Bible which is a testament of God’s interaction with humanity through generations. We also have stories we have heard from our parents and grandparents, pastors and teachers, friends and neighbors, and of course from reading books like “The Shack”.We also know ourselves from our own personal experience how God works in our own lives.
The word relationship is the most important word in describing the Trinity. The trinity isn’t a what, the trinity is WHO.We have described God as the Creator, again, our words are way to limiting in defining who God is and how God works amongst us.God the Creator we believe has made all there is out of great joy and love.Let’s narrow our conversation to the earth.
God created the earth out of joy and love and put humanity, made from the earth, in charge of keeping the earth as one tends and keeps a garden to keep it producing well for generations to come.God created humanity out of God’s need to be in relationship; so God made us in God’s image, both male and female together makes us God’s image. God thinks very highly of humanity. Each one of us, God loves as a father or mother would love there own children.I take great offense when people talk of human beings in degrading words such as ‘worms’.First of all, what’s so bad about worms, second of all, when God created all, God looked as us and said we are GOOD, not worms!
God the creator created with wisdom who work alongside and with God in designing the handiwork of God. Jesus is that very Word and wisdom of God, Jesus is the expression of God’s thoughts and relationship with humans. This speaks again of how highly God thinks of humanity.God loves us so much, that God, our creator, sent Jesus to live among us.God sent Jesus born on Christmas to live among us and show us how to live, and to reconcile humans with God’s intention for humankind.God didn’t want us living in brokenness.Humanity’s relationship of love with God and with other people got lost in rules of who you should associate with and ritual of how to be made clean.
God wanted us to be able to love rather than harm those who are most unlike us, and God showed us this through Jesus. Then after Jesus died, rose from the dead and returned to the Creator God; God’s love was then and continues to be poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
This all sounds so very dry, but nothing could be more exciting and profound that this excellent attempt at describing how God is in relationship with us. Right?Right! So there is your religion lesson for today. But God is anything BUT boring!Because no words can describe how we experience God’s relationship with you and I.
This I know for sure; God is in relationship with us.Know one knows how God works, or why God loves us so very much that God is mindful of us and cares for us.But God does love us and has placed us in the position of caring for God’s good creation. Rather than spending a lot of time attempting to define God and put God within our understanding, I would rather us invest our energies in loving and caring for God’s good creation.
